When someone loses their sight, we\u2019re here to make sure they don\u2019t lose their freedom as well. These remarkable women organised the training of the first four British guide dogs from a humble lock up garage in Wallasey, Merseyside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We\u2019ve come a very long way since those early days. Today Guide Dogs is the world&#8217;s largest breeder and trainer of working dogs. And thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers \u2013 and your vital donations \u2013 we\u2019ve helped over 29,000 people to achieve life-changing independence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidedogs.org.uk\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-662 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christmas-connections.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guidedogsfour.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Our Mission<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidedogs.org.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-661 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christmas-connections.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guidedogsthree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"815\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">How is your donation spent<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In 2016, it cost\u00a0<strong>\u00a348.9 million<\/strong>\u00a0to run the guide dog service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It costs Guide Dogs\u00a0<strong>\u00a356,800<\/strong>\u00a0to support a guide dog from birth to retirement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This cost is made up of the following six stages:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Breeding a guide dog puppy \u00a33,600<\/strong><br \/>\nWe hand-pick the best dogs around to breed the next generation of world-class guide dogs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Puppy walking \u00a35,300<\/strong><br \/>\nOur puppies are house trained, taught basic obedience and familiarised with our busy world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Early training \u00a322,000<\/strong><br \/>\nNew trainees learn how to guide by walking down the centre of a pavement, avoiding obstacles, stopping at the kerbs and crossing the road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Advanced training \u00a310,400<\/strong><br \/>\nHaving mastered the essentials, each dog is matched with a prospective owner and undergoes further training tailored to the owner\u2019s specific needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Partnership training \u00a33,300<\/strong><br \/>\nFinally we bring dog and owner together to complete their training, forming a new life-changing partnership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>To breed and train a guide dog costs \u00a344,600<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Supporting partnerships \u00a312,200<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Guide Dogs continues to support our dogs during their time working as a guide.
