This frosty Christmas card features a busy city scene in winter, painted in the early 1900s by French artist Eugène Galien-Laloue. A cluster of men, women and children stroll along a cold street, which is blanketed in snow. A sprinkling of sleet falls softly from the sky above, as an old-fashioned tram transports Christmas shoppers home. At the forefront and centre of the image, a woman stands, dressed warmly in a long coat, fur hat and scarf. She clutches her wrappings tightly around her, to brace herself against the chilly air. A strong winter wind can be seen blowing through the tall, bare trees. One of the most striking elements of this Christmas card is the eerie winter sky, which appears greyish-brown in the evening light. This little-known piece of French art makes for a beautiful and unusual Christmas greetings card.
